Absolutely Clear

December 6, 2011

The unqualified ‘live and let live’ approach to ethics, morality and truth leaves the public debate in confusion. Most people are weary of waffle and politically correct mumbo jumbo simply polarises debates rather than opening up dialogue. Extremist politics thrive on lack of understanding and truth. The secular humanist passion for ‘tolerance’ is a smokescreen to dumb down the argument and obscure life giving truth. When Jesus said, “The Truth will set you free,” He was not talking about mere freedom of expression in the way that an artist might be free to explore an idea. Jesus was talking about the total liberty, hope and freedom to live life to the full. To enjoy this kind of life requires that absolute truth is spoken out. We should judge our lives and actions against certainty.

Imagine developing a serious pain in your chest and shortness of breath, and going to see a doctor. Imagine if he begins by saying “Now, we must not assume that this is abnormal. This might be normal for you, let’s have some meditations to reflect on a wider understanding of normality.” This would not be encouraging! We want a clear, definite diagnosis and consequential action plan to remedy our need. A confident diagnosis followed by well informed proposals for action would give us tangible hope.

Christians believe in three absolute truths:

 Christ has died

Christ is risen

Christ will come again

All humanity recognises two other truths: We all are born, and we will all pass away from this life.

Jesus said that no-one will come to the Father, except through Him. He is the Hope of the world.

The secular philosophers, including those who masquerade as theologians and scholars have robbed our society of hope with their empty debates and deathly deception.

Truth is not like the claims of homeopathic treatments, somehow becoming more potent as it is ever more diluted!

Truth can hurt, like an antiseptic ointment in a cut.

Truth can divide, like the surgeon who cuts out a cancerous growth.

Truth may constrain, like a splint on a broken limb.

Truth may hurt, like physiotherapy on a weakened muscle.

Ultimately, absolute truth will re-align and liberate people. Knowing the truth brings clarity, understanding and stability. All else is quicksand.

Absolute Mystery

December 4, 2011

The Graeco-Roman mindset of our day seems to demand logic, reason and empirical data. However, if there is a God who created everything we see, that God must be beyond our capacity to fully know or control.

The human race is drawn to the mystical and the sense of ‘other’ that we sometimes call supernatural or spiritual. The empirical evidence of human experience – from the grand sweep of history to individual’s dreams is that there is more than we can see or measure. Most of the people on the planet believe in a supernatural realm and a god or gods. The western secular humanist community argue against the evidence when they cling to their notion of there being no more than science and the material world.

In Mere Christianity (1952) CS Lewis put it so clearly:  “This is the terrible fix we are in. If the universe is not governed by an absolute goodness, then all our efforts are in the long run hopeless. But if it is, then we are making ourselves enemies to that goodness every day, and are not in the least likely to do any better tomorrow, and so our case is hopeless again….God is the only comfort, He is also the supreme terror: the thing we most need and the thing we most want to hide from.”

God is mystical and ‘other’ but He is not vague, indecisive and ambiguous in His views.

Again in Mere Christianity, Lewis challenges our thinking:

“Some people talk as if meeting the gaze of absolute goodness would be fun. They need to think again. They are still only playing with religion. Goodness is either the great safety or the great danger — according to the way you react to it.”

We meet Him on His terms. Anything less, and we are not considering ‘God’ but an merely an idea.

Absolutely!

I keep meeting people who have been hurt by ‘absolutes’. It seems that many of those we interact with are bruised from their collisions with absolute truth – or rather the impact of those claiming to have simple, hard edged answers to all of life. The issue here seems to boil down to the experiences that people have had – often negative encounters.

I have observed a number of issues at play here. Some of those who offer their opinions in the form of simplified absolutes are often not as well informed as they pretend to be. The easy answer may only be a vehicle for prejudice, such as generalisations about races or cultures. Many take a political stance based on loyalty to a party or parents, rather than consideration of the arguments. When someone’s opinion is based on wafer thin understanding, they usually put it across with more aggression or vehemence than necessary. An insecure position seems to feed a wrong attitude. In response to imperialistic, dogmatic, non-consultative and authoritarian approaches, many have reacted by retreating from anything that seems inflexible or definite.

The flipside also needs looking at: We have had a generation of being told to ‘live and let live’; that all positions need to be heard. The desire to compensate for past arrogant views of other cultures has pushed us towards making a god of ‘tolerance’. Tolerance that is, of everything except absolutes.

The grave danger is that our society simply polarises: Most people can sense what is authentic, and can also smell a rat. Strongly held opinions aggressively preached by those who will not listen or engage with other views, are discouraging and repelling. On the other side, changeable and indistinct reasoning dulls the argument and ultimately frustrates those seeking answers.

We may not have a monopoly on absolute truth, but let’s ensure that with a good heart, we genuinely pursue truth, more than the vindication of our position.

Prophecy – is it for real?

October 16, 2011

Everybody senses something outside themselves at some point. Whether an intuition, premonition or revelation. People of all cultures across the world and across history tell stories of their dreams, intuition, ‘6th sense’ or insights into previously things previously unknown to them. This seems to be the way we are made.

If we remove prophecy from the Bible we are not left with much. If we remove prophetic from the Gospel we are not left with a gospel. For two thousand years Christians have stated their core belief:

Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again.

Can we know what God is saying? This is not just about fore-telling, but forth-telling. Explaining current events is as vital in prophecy as predicting the unknown. Those who become transfixed with the issue of prediction can miss the main point. God is personal and wants to communicate. He is not only talking about the future – but our present circumstances. A focus on prediction can develop  into an unbalanced message. But understanding the heart of God can lead us into seeing the future.

Today I debated on Radio Merseyside this with Dr John Wallis of Hope University who described himself as ‘an extreme athiest’! Listen here:  http://bbc.in/Prophecy4Real     [1 hour 29 minutes in]

Jesus embodies prophecy. He personally brings the reality of the Father to us. It makes sense that if we are connected with the creator of the universe, who sits outside of time, the One who knows everything, including the future, we may also get glimpses of the future.

The King’s Speech

April 30, 2011

It is not a trivial coincidence that the movie, “The King’s Speech” has been made and released at this time.

One Body because we eat one Bread

The film depicts the king of the United Kingdom in the 1930’s being coached in readiness for a crucial speech as the nation approaches the Second World War. The parallels with today are profound: The United Kingdom is approaching a social, economic and spiritual crisis that is on a par with the challenge of that era. Today the nation is not facing a single opposing national army with bombs, planes and tanks, but an economic collapse, a social catastrophe and loss of identity as well as militant opponents from around the world. There is a King who wants to speak to the nation, but He is not a human king who is incompetent, but a glorious King who, even though God of all, has chosen to speak through His people, the Church. Right now, the Church is being coached by the Holy Spirit to be able to speak to the nation in the crisis. At this moment the Church seems incompetent and unready, but by the grace of God, the spread-out, volunteer army, the people of God, will come together and learn to speak coherently to a nation that desperately needs to hear the authentic words of God. We must pray that this coaching process succeeds as in the movie. Let us pray in agreement for the King’s speech to be heard before it is too late.

About to Boil Over?

April 25, 2011

What is the Spirit saying to the Church? Last week I was in the USA and met with quite a number of people in 3 states. It seemed that everyone is asking each other about what is  happening in the world and what is the Holy Spirit saying to us. As I was travelling and listening I had a very clear impression in my spirit that God was likening the current situation to a pan of milk heating on a stove. Anyone who has ever boiled milk in this way knows that there is a moment when the milk suddenly boils, and that immediately prior to the ‘boiling over’ the surface of the milk has a particular shimmering look. If you know that shimmer you can catch the milk before it boils over and creates a mess. I sensed in my spirit that the shaking of the USA and the world system is at that point where a sudden ‘boiling over’ is imminent. This is a moment to pray for the Kingdom of God to prevail in the crisis that is approaching. In a moment of crisis, the person who takes the initiative has greatest impact on the outcome. This is a good time to pray “let your Kingdom come, let Your will be done…”

What Will Shake Next?

March 23, 2011

Eighteen years ago I had a powerful vivid dream about a massive earthquake in Japan followed by a nuclear cloud. Almost every day since that dream I have turned on the news with the strong belief that what I saw will happen at some point. I believe that all I saw in my dream in 1993 has not yet fully happened. Two years after my dream, friends asked me if the Kobe earthquake was what I had seen. I said it was not, because what I saw, had huge and immediate global implications. I saw the communications systems of the world shut down for a period of hours and the stock markets of all nations crumble as national debts and despair collided. Again, people have been asking me if the quake, tsunami and nuclear crisis of this past week are the fulfilment of the dream. I have asked myself the same question as it has indeed been shocking, and the domino effect on the world economy may well have further to run.

In my dream of 1993 I saw a gigantic earthquake which rocked Japan and knocked out communication systems temporarily and caused a sense of shock across the world at the scale of the catastrophe. In the dream I experienced an eerie silence as the world was stunned for some hours. Immediately afterwards I saw a nuclear mushroom cloud which was connected in some way to the city of Brussels. Following these two events I saw the world economy collapse and whole nations having to re-structure their financial systems. I knew in my heart that the dream spoke of a turning point for the world, after which the shaking in the earth would intensify to a level never seen before.

The events in Japan the past week are a strong signal of a change. I believe a new season of shaking has now begun. The Bible says that the earth groans as all creation awaits the end of the age. God is allowing all that we put our confidence in to be shaken. Nations and organizations that oppose God’s purposes will be shaken in order that they will reconsider. As 9-11 was a turning point in world politics, I believe the Japanese earthquake is a turning point after which the shaking of all nations will significantly intensify. The Bible clearly points us towards God as the only One who can help when we experience shaking of our very environment and man-made systems.

The Giant is Beginning to Stir

January 27, 2011

Years ago I had the job of entertaining kids in a hall while their parents enjoyed the church evening meeting without their energetic and restless offspring. Each week I would invent games or activities that would challenge and entertain. One favourite for the 5 to 12 year olds was where I would pretend to be a giant asleep at one end of the hall while they stole up on me. If they made a sound I would ‘wake up’ and chase them. The nearest would be caught and so be ‘out’. The last one to be out was the winner of a Mars bar or similar. As I reflect on this game I can’t understand why they didn’t just hang back and avoid the risk of waking the giant! Maybe there is something irresistible about provoking a sleeping threat?

It seems that the forces of secular humanism, false religion and the anti-Christian spirits are provoking the sleeping giant that is the Church in the United Kingdom. This has been happening for a generation but the giant has remained unperturbed. Until now. It seems that the forces opposed to the Truth really believe that they might actually get bold and close enough to smother the giant forever. The encroaching challengers may not realize that the giant has some of the centuries old wisdom like the Ents in Lord of the Rings and some of the potential that Gulliver had to help the islanders after he awoke.

The giant is not dead – just asleep! The giant is starting to awake. The urgency is great and the Church must awaken quickly as her opponents intend to anaesthetize and suffocate her! When she is alert and active she will rise up to defend the cause of truth and liberty on behalf of all. The drama is reaching a critical moment in 2011. Please join the voices calling the Church to stand up, speak out and take action.

As the Bible says to the Church:

Wake up O sleeper and rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you

Heal Our Land

May 17, 2010

Heal Our Land moved yesterday from Liverpool to Ashford!

In Liverpool on 10th May, over 1000 people came together to call on God to heal this land. On Saturday 15th, an estimated 1000 people came to Newsham Park for a wonderful proclamation of the Truth of Jesus – the only solution for the nation.

God has a wonderful strategy: With the initial event in Liverpool – a major gateway to the world for Britain for over two centuries, the Heal Our Land initiative moves to Ashford – the port town of the Channel tunnel – the link with mainland Europe.

God continues to stir this nation to prayer and action to tell people about Jesus. This call to come together, pray, repent and receive God’s anointing to speak to the world, is a growing call to the Church of Great Britain to BE the servant of God for the healing of the land.

Please join the Heal Our Land Ashford group – link below. That way you can be kept informed of how things are developing and receive prompts for prayer. This whole thing is going to continue to develop over coming months – God is at work!

75 years ago the Jeffreys brothers came to Liverpool to conduct a healing crusade in Bootle – where Heal Our Land Liverpool was effectively started on 2nd May in a meeting that Bishop James Jones spoke at – commemorating 100 years of St John and St James church. After several weeks of revival, healings and widespread salvation, the Jeffreys brothers moved their tent to Newsham Park and led another crusade – which resulted in a further move of God and the establishment of further churches with many people saved and healed. On Saturday 15th May, Heal Our Land Merseyside concluded with a city-wide outreach event in Newsham Park. Dozens of people committed their lives to the Lord and dozens more were prayed for to receive help in their lives. Many people came to a wonderful day of music, dancing and Christian witness. Many nations were represented – Iranians, Nigerians, Ghanaians, Pakistanis, Sri Lankans, Americans, Brazilians, Bolivians, Algerians, Yemeni, South African, Italian, and of course Liverpool people – probably others as well!

God is re-digging old wells! By being part of this group and praying alongside us, we are joining together to see Great Britain healed.

Time To Speak!

March 26, 2010

The Following is the text of a speech I gave in a consultation meeting in the House of Lords on 25th March 2010:

When I spoke here sixteen months ago I said that I believed that God was saying that we should gather Christians in business for two years and then see Christians raised up in public life over the subsequent two years. If this was true, we have an urgent task over the coming eight months! I hope we are agreed that we have a most urgent situation in front of us.

Talking with people across the country it seems that people are either passive or provoked.

Those who seem passive have perhaps not been informed adequately. Perhaps they are in churches or businesses that are consumed with current activity, or led by leaders who simply don’t believe that God is doing anything. I believe that many, the majority, in our nation are gripped by the attitude described in Zephaniah 1v12 : “..those who are complacent,…who think ‘The LORD will do nothing, either good or bad.’”

In business this means the economy will recover, and we will soon get back to pursuing our goals. In politics it means that the Living God is not a factor, only public opinion matters. In society it means that there are no absolutes and we are masters of our own souls.

There are however a growing number who have been provoked and motivated to speak and take action.

Six months ago we launched a Christian Business Forum and within weeks had over 150 members signed up and it continues to grow. Speaking out and being ‘a voice’ is a major theme. Our prayer meetings have been enthusiastically attended and filled with passionate urgent prayer. There have also been Spirit led connections opening new business ideas. The concept of ‘Business as Mission’ seems to have caught fire worldwide amongst many independent groups. In the pressure there is certainly hope.

What should we be doing?

I believe that:

  • We must recognise that a real national emergency is almost upon us.
  • The trauma approaching will affect businesses and the economy. This will affect household incomes and the capacity of the state to provide services.
  • With economic stress there will be racial and social tension. We MUST realise that the far right racist parties FULLY intend to exploit the situation, as apparent vindication of their social agenda. Be aware – the main national racist party already distributes material quoting 2 Chronicles 7:14 and clearly stating “It has been left to this party to call the nation to prayer.”
  • We must motivate people to live a more contented lifestyle and reduce their debts, give to others who are in need, and save for the future so they don’t need to borrow.
  • The Church of Jesus Christ must speak out in every sphere of our national life. We need business leaders who pray publicly and dare to disciple people; We need political activists who are not looking for a career but to speak truth, however unpopular;
  • We must speak out, otherwise we leave the green movement creating a new moral agenda, and the extreme right stealing and distorting our Christian heritage.
  • If a million active voting Christians will make public their intention to vote for Christians and Christian values, the political landscape will be changed.

More than ever we need Christian believers to be vocal and active leaders where they are. It is Judeo-Christian truth that brings liberty, tolerance and fairness, more so than any other religion or philosophy. It is the Church that must demonstrate racial harmony – more so than any other institution.

I believe the word that God has given me to share for this hour is from the book of Esther. Through manipulative leaders a law was issued: that the people of God could be rounded up and attacked. This law drove the people to call on God and then a second decree was issued which changed everything: The people of God were given permission to defend themselves. The effect was immediate: The people of God were filled with joy and the enemies of God were overcome with fear.

God is reminding the Church in Britain: You have permission to defend yourselves.

Some signs of this:

Christian Business networks are springing forth with boldness everywhere!

In Liverpool a Christian singer friend of mine, Liam Moore has taught over 6000 school children a song called ‘You’re the Voice’ – challenging them to be the generation that speaks out against bullying and violence.

On Facebook right now 41,000 people are planning to buy the Christian song ‘History Maker’ in Easter week to get it to the top of the charts – to make a visible statement for the Kingdom.

Across the country a fresh wave of Christians are standing in the parliamentary and local elections to speak out for Christian democracy.

Great Britain is at a crossroads. We still have a choice about which way to go.
